10-Year storage limit

Malaysian Medical Council guidelines state that sperm, eggs, or embryos can be stored for up to five (5) years initially, which can be extended for another five (5) years upon your written request. If you continue payment of your annual storage fees after the first 5 years, we will consider this as a request to continue storage.

After 10 years of storage, if you have not opted to move them to another country with different storage guidelines, we will have to dispose of your sperm, eggs, or embryos.

Good to know

The start date for the storage of embryos, that have involved previously-stored sperm or eggs, is the date the eggs or sperm were first frozen.

  • For example: If you had embryos created in 2020 using sperm frozen in 2018, the 10-year expiry date for the embryos would be in 2028. 10 years after 2018.
  • If extended storage is declined, you forget to write in OR the clinic is unable to reach you, your frozen sperm, eggs, embryos, and ovarian tissue will be discarded at expiry.
  • The clinic has up to six months to dispose of the material, but it cannot be used after the expiry date even if it has not yet been discarded.

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
